12V vs 24V COB LED Strip Light: Which Voltage Should Buyers Choose?

Compare 12V and 24V COB LED strip light for run length, voltage drop, driver choice, cutting unit and B2B sample approval.

The short answer

Choose 12V COB LED strip for short runs, compact furniture details and markets where 12V accessories are common. Choose 24V COB LED strip for longer commercial runs, higher wattage or projects where voltage drop needs to be easier to control.

The right voltage depends on total length, wattage per meter, driver position, cable distance, cutting unit and local accessory availability.

Why voltage matters for COB projects

COB strips create a smooth light line, but they still follow the same electrical rules as other LED strips. Longer runs and higher wattage increase the risk of voltage drop.

If voltage drop is not planned, the far end of the strip may look dimmer, especially in long cove runs, retail shelves or continuous profile installations.

When 12V COB strip makes sense

12V COB strip can be convenient for short cabinets, display cases, small signs and compact furniture where the power supply is close to the strip.

It can also suit distributors in markets where 12V drivers and accessories are already common. The limitation is that longer or higher-power runs may need more careful feeding.

When 24V COB strip is better

24V COB strip is often preferred for longer project runs because it can deliver the same power with lower current than 12V. This helps reduce voltage drop and simplifies wiring in many commercial installations.

For cove lighting, long shelves, hotel corridors and profile-based linear lighting, 24V is often the safer default unless there is a clear project reason to use 12V.

Driver, cutting unit and sample testing

Voltage affects driver selection and may also affect cutting unit. Buyers should compare 12V and 24V COB strips using the same wattage target, CCT, CRI, IP rating and profile.

Test samples at the intended run length, not only as short desk samples. Record brightness, heat, measured current, color appearance and any visible voltage drop.

FAQ

Is 24V COB LED strip better than 12V?

For longer runs, 24V is often easier to manage. For short runs, 12V can still be suitable.

Can I connect 24V COB strip to a 12V power supply?

No. The power supply voltage should match the strip voltage.

What should I send for voltage recommendation?

Send total length, wattage target, driver position, CCT/color, IP rating and installation drawing.
