How to Connect COB LED Strip Light: Connectors, Soldering and Power

Connect COB LED strip light with the right voltage, polarity, connector, soldering method, power supply and waterproof sealing plan.

The short answer

Connect COB LED strip light by matching the strip voltage, polarity, controller type and power supply capacity. Single-color COB strips usually use positive and negative pads, while RGB, RGBW and tunable versions need matching controller channels.

For long-term project use, the connection method should be chosen together with PCB width, IP rating, cutting unit and installation access.

Match voltage and polarity first

A 24V COB strip should use a 24V power supply, and a 12V COB strip should use a 12V power supply. Wrong voltage can cause low brightness, damage or failure.

Polarity also matters. If the strip does not light, disconnect power before checking positive and negative connections.

Connectors vs soldering

Connectors are useful for quick samples and accessible installations, but they must match PCB width, pad spacing, strip type and waterproof structure. Ultra-narrow COB strips may not have enough space for common clip connectors.

Soldering is often stronger for narrow COB strips, long-term commercial projects, furniture grooves or places where movement and vibration may affect a clip connection.

RGB, RGBW and tunable COB connections

RGB, RGBW, RGBWW and tunable white COB strips require controllers that match the voltage and channel structure. Channel order should be checked before installation because wire colors and controller markings can vary.

For quotation, tell the supplier whether the project needs static color, dimming, RGB effects, RGBW white quality, tunable white or a specific control protocol.

Power supply sizing

Calculate total wattage by multiplying wattage per meter by total length, then add a reserve margin for the power supply. Long or high-power runs may need power injection or multiple feeds.

Driver location, cable length and wire gauge all affect voltage drop. Plan these details before the strip is hidden inside a profile or furniture structure.

Waterproof connection notes

For IP-rated COB strips, connector treatment and cable exits are as important as the strip body. Poor sealing at a cut end can cause failure even when the strip itself is waterproof.

Outdoor projects should confirm end caps, cable direction, mounting method and whether factory connection is safer than field connection.

FAQ

Can COB LED strips use connectors?

Some can, but the connector must match PCB width, pad position, strip type and IP structure.

Is soldering better for COB LED strip?

Soldering is often stronger for narrow strips, long-term projects and installations where connection reliability is important.

How do I size the power supply?

Multiply watts per meter by total length, then add reserve capacity and consider voltage drop and wiring distance.
