Can You Cut COB LED Strip Lights? Cutting Unit and Connection Guide

Many COB LED strip lights can be cut, but only at the marked cutting points or according to the cutting unit supplied for the exact model. Cutting in the wrong place can damage the circuit and make reconnection difficult.

For B2B projects, the key questions are how often the strip can be cut, how it will be connected, whether waterproof sealing is needed and whether factory-cut lengths are safer.

COB strips have defined cutting units, such as 20mm, 25mm, 33.3mm, 38.5mm or 50mm depending on the model. The exact value should be confirmed from the supplier before quotation.

Never assume all COB strips use the same cut length. Different voltage, width, density and color-control structures can change the cutting unit.

A correctly cut COB strip can usually be reconnected if the remaining section receives the right voltage and polarity. The method may be soldering, compatible connectors or factory-prepared cables.

Clip connectors can be convenient for samples, but soldering is often stronger for narrow strips, long-term projects, vibration areas or installations where connector space is limited.

Waterproof COB strips need more care after cutting. The cut end, connector area and cable exit must be sealed correctly, otherwise moisture can enter even if the strip body has a high IP rating.

For outdoor or large project orders, ask whether factory-cut lengths, molded cable exits or sealed accessories are recommended to reduce installation risk.

Cut-free COB LED strip can be useful when projects need more flexible length matching or reduced waste. It can also simplify quotation for furniture, display cases or profile runs with many short sections.

Even with cut-free or flexible-cut options, buyers should confirm connection method, warranty condition and whether field cutting is suitable for the required IP grade.

Confirm model, voltage, PCB width, wattage, CCT or color, cutting unit, connector type, soldering requirement, IP rating, cable exit direction and whether installers will cut on site.

Ask for sample photos or test pieces after cutting and reconnection if the project depends on many short sections.
