What Is COB LED Strip Light? Buyer Guide for Smooth Linear Lighting

A COB LED strip light is a flexible LED strip that uses chip-on-board technology to create a smoother, more continuous light surface than many standard SMD LED strips. It is often chosen when the project needs a cleaner visible line with fewer visible dots.

For B2B buyers, COB is most useful for cabinets, shelves, display cases, furniture grooves, shallow profiles and premium interiors where appearance matters as much as brightness.

SMD LED strips use individual LED packages mounted on the flexible PCB. COB LED strips place many LED chips closer together under a phosphor layer, which helps the strip look smoother in shallow channels or exposed decorative lines.

LED neon flex is different again: it usually uses a silicone body to diffuse the light and create a neon-like profile. COB strip is thinner and more suitable for profiles, shelves and furniture details, while neon flex is stronger for signs, outlines and shaped decorative runs.

COB strips reduce visible light points, but the final result still depends on wattage, profile depth, diffuser quality and viewing distance. A COB strip can look very smooth in the right profile, while a poor installation can still show uneven brightness.

For sample approval, compare COB and SMD strips with the same CCT, similar wattage, the same profile and the same diffuser. Product photos alone are not enough for a repeat project decision.
